My story is a very common one--that of a former high school athlete who started his career and by age 31 found himself out of shape to the point of being obese.  Through a span of five years, I slowly modified my diet, exercise, and way of life to lose much of the weight I had gained in my 20s.

In June of 2012, I challenged myself to run 30 straight days--no matter how slow.  I ran at least 30 minutes or 5 kilometers.  Though difficult and challenging, I stuck with it and soon found myself with a six week running streak.  Over the course of the next few months, I started running farther than I had ever run in my life.  By August 2012, I ran my first marathon distance--though not an actual race.  I ran from Luxembourg City to Echternach.  When I completed the distance, something inside of me felt as if I could have run farther.  This is how I soon discovered the world of ultrarunning.

I devoured as many books and blogs as I could related to ultrarunning.  In January 2012, I ran my first ultramarathon distance of 50km.  Over the next two plus years, I trained more and more while knocking off farther distances.  I ran across the country of Luxembourg from east to west--a span of 63 km or 39 miles.  My challenge was to run 39 miles before my 39th birthday.  In May of 2014 I successfully completed the run and set my sights on 50 miles.  When I saw that 50 miles was only 20 kilometers short of 100 kilometers, I bypassed the 50 miles and went for the 100 kilometers.  In July of 2014, I ran the 100 km.

Finally in May of 2015, I finished the final hurdle of my path to being an ultrarunner, I entered my first race of my life and completed the Keys 100.
